We feel the genetic counselor should first speak with Jennifer’s mother alone about the paternity of their child. Jennifer’s mother should be the one to tell her husband that he is not Jennifer’s father. If she is unwilling to do this, the husband has the right to know his cystic fibrosis carrier status since he went through the DNA testing. The counselor would have to tell him the truth if Jennifer’s mother does not. If the mother is willing to identify the biological father, he deserves to know that Jennifer is his daughter. He also has the right to know that Jennifer has CF. Knowing this he would probably investigate the condition and find that he could be a carrier. It may not make a difference to him and he should make the decision to be tested on his own. He may even be in a relationship with someone and could possibly have children who do not have CF. If the mother is not willing to tell who the biological father is, there really is nothing that can be done to inform the biological father. She really should do the right thing and be honest about who the father is, but that would ultimately be her decision on whether to come clean or not.
