I don't believe that making a decision to have a cochlear implant lessens the respect and or pride of the deaf community. Deaf individuals have made many accomplishments, but they are at a disadvantage with the number of choices they have for things such as a career choice. I say this as a person who grew up with a deaf grandmother. She was very proud of her deaf community, but there were certain things that she could not do because of her limitations. On the otherhand, out of respect for freedom of choice, I do believe that it should be up to the child to have the option of a cochlear implant. A disability can shape the values that a person has, and since being deaf isn't a life-threatening disability, the implant should be post-poned until the child is old enough to choose for himself even if the chance of it being successful decreases.
This case opened my eyes to a new way of looking at the deaf community. I don't personally know anyone who is deaf. It is neat how they have taken pride in their differences and I wish that everyone else could follow their example and embrace what makes them unique from others.
