Dr. T’s responsibility as a physician is to treat the condition that Jeff R. presented to her office with. His condition does not require antibiotics, but if antibiotics are not prescribed Dr. T poses the risk of having a patient unhappy with services provided and may lose Jeff R as a patient. Although the antibiotics most likely won’t help Jeff R.’s condition, Dr. T. should honor the patient’s wishes. Providing unnecessary drugs or treatments should not be based solely on psychological comfort, but also promotes trust between the physician and the patient. The physician should not make these decisions lightly. Potential risks should be explained to the patient, but if the decision does not pose a severe risk to the patient, then the physician should provide the treatment that the patient deems necessary.
Our group feels that the doctor should not give the patient the antibiotics. The doctor knows what is best. That is why we go to the doctor in the first place is to get the experts opinion. It seems that patient would be neglecting the doctor’s knowledge if he feels that he doesn’t heed their advice. Based on the fact the fact sometimes it mind over matter, if a patient is so insistent, maybe prescribing a low dose, fewer days would make them think they’re better quicker than they would be without it.
